Africa Studies Fellow

Letom Kpea is from the Phoenix metropolitan area and is an undergraduate at the University of Chicago, where she studies Political Science and Law, Letters, and Society on a pre-law track. Community service and civic engagement are central to her work. In her hometown, she spearheaded the creation of an Art Walk that grew into an annual citywide event aimed at bringing more art into the community.

She serves on the Action Committee for the Organization of Black Students, was a Seeds of Justice Fellow with the Community Service Center, and is now leading the effort to charter an official collegiate NAACP chapter on her campus.

This past summer, Letom served as a Legal Intern with the Los Angeles County Attorney’s Office, where she conducted legal review for exoneration cases. She also participated in the Future Justice Lawyers of Chicago program, where she contributed to a policy brief on the implications of parole for formerly incarcerated individuals. She currently holds roles in the University Communications Department and the Forum for Free Inquiry and Expression.

After completing her undergraduate studies, Letom plans to attend law school, become a prosecutor, and later transition into international relations work as a diplomat or foreign service officer.
